Your shrinker will help control and reduce swelling of your residual limb as well as promote healing. Shrinkers resemble an elastic sock, sometimes with an attached waistband and are meant to fit snugly to apply pressure to your limb. It’s important to use proper care when washing your shrinker as instructed on the package.

Be sure to follow these guidelines when using your shrinker:

Apply the shrinker by stretching it as wide as possible, placing your fingers at the bottom of the shrinker. While your suture line is still tender, have 1-2 people help with application if possible.

Place the bottom of the shrinker on the bottom of your limb and work the material up the limb. Make sure that the pressure is greatest at the end of your limb and lesser toward your thigh.

The shrinker should be pulled up completely and snug against the bottom of the limb without any slack. Slack will cause swelling at the end of your limb. Throughout the day, be sure to check that the shrinker is in its proper place.
